PELLETS 101

PELLETS OFFER A BETTER ADVANTAGE OVER THE TRADITIONAL FEED. UP UNTIL TODAY THERE WAS NOT BEEN A DISADVANTAGE TO USING PELLETS.

Feeding Tips

Feeding Directions are guidelines only and should be used as a starting point and adjusted to meet individual needs. There are natural variations in feedstuffs. The temperament of the individual horses may influence energy requirements by as much as 20%. Many horses may benefit from the addition of a vitamin mineral supplement that is designed for the particular age or purpose of the horse. All horses should be fed at least 1.5lb per 100lb body wgt. of forage, pellets, hay or pasture per day. These feeding instructions were calculated using energy requirements as published by N.R.C. The energy yield of each ration is calculated by using published values for each major ingredient as well as analysis of local feeds. These directions are based upon energy requirements only and do not include protein or vitamins and minerals.

 Management

Accuracy and timing of feeding horses are creatures of habit. For best results the feeding habit schedule should be very consistent from day to day.

 Accuracy of feeding can save the horse owner considerable cost. If possible, the feed should be weighed at each feeding. Adjustment can be made when necessary to maintain proper weight or work load.

 If a scale is not available in the feed room, a scoop or large (coffee) can, can be used but should be checked for weight regularly.

 Caution: Follow your veterinarian’s recommended for health care and worming programs.

 Provide clean, fresh water at all times.

 Broodmare should receive a vitamin and mineral supplement. Breeding time, the last 90 days of gestation and lactation that a supplement will be beneficial to prevent mineral deficiencies.
